3D Printing 2023

Alduin dragon for Noah

As I am getting back into 3D Printing I needed to pick something simple, but a tiny tower – which was about the size of a USB stick – just wasn’t cutting it.

So we had a search and picked a file containing a bust of a dragon from.

This dragon – Alduin, from the video game Skyrim – was large enough to test the waters of the 3d printer on its new program and simple enough that it wasn’t going to also break our brains figuring it out.

We got the file from Thingiverse, created by a person called ‘JackTheTinkerer‘ and it was a simple STL single file project.

We are using a Creality CR10S-Pro V2 printer and decided to use Ultimaker Cura as a slicer program after many excellent reviews. Its also open source software which is very cool. The creality printer does come with a slicer program but this one is better by far.

We are also using Octoprint on a Raspberry Pi 3 with a logitech C270 webcam. This is outputting the G-Code generated by Cura to the printer via the printers USB port. The printer is also giving feedback on head and bed temperatures etc. This setup is very cool and means no more transferring files via the SD card, everything is wireless and the added bonus is you can remotely monitor your prints locally or remotely. Octoprint also has many plugins available including an AI Failure detection and many more. Its an amazing piece of software with lots of potential.

Short video of it printing with Time Lapse below, we forgot is was printing and turned the lights of ha ha 🙂

The Dragon was painted by Noah with Enamel paints and it looks awesome 🙂

Now on to the Nuke Cola bottle from Fallout 4 – thanks Yakeru
